Since the 1970's paintings have explored colour, pictorial structure & the relationship between the abstract & the figurative. Since mid 1980's the abstracted figure & elements of the environment have been used to explore the impact of massive social/political change during that time. Current paintings refer to the destruction of architectural heritage.
Paintings may be seen at CoCA 66 Gloucester Street Christchurch, Janne Land Gallery 170 Cuba Street Wellington, Oedipus Rex 32 Lorne Street Auckland and at the artist's residence.
Born 1945 in Wanganui, trained at School of Fine Arts Canterbury University 1964-66, Diploma Fine Arts in Painting. CHCH Teachers College 1968 Dip. Teaching. Full time art & art history teaching 1969-95. HOD Art Cashmere High School 1981-95. 1997 Goethe Institut Artist's Scholarship. Paints and teaches in Christchurch.
Ross Gray has exhibited widely & regularly since 1967 both group & solo including numerous at CoCA Gallery CHCH, also in Auckland, Nelson & Wellington. Represented in many private collections in NZ & Overseas, and in public collections : Auckland Art Gallery, CoCA Gallery, Suter Art Gallery Nelson. Corporate collections : BNZ, ANZ, Qantas. Dec 1997 - Feb 1998 solo survey exhibition at sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui. January - February 1998 participant in 'Rudolf Gopas and his Students' exhibition at CoCA .
