NEW ZEALAND: SLEEP IN THE FOREST, DREAMS OF THE SEA
Paintings
by Linda James
COCA Christchurch June 14th- July 1st 2006
In this
series of eight large paintings, images of New Zealand bush,
river and sea are sourced from postcards, calendars, and scenic
picture books. The scenes are painted onto large canvas surfaces
textured with clothes.
The combination
of the images and their source, the clothes, and the scale
of the work create a montage designed to create a dialogue
between the paintings and the viewer.
The montage
takes these easily referenced components, and puts them together
in order to create meanings that can resonate in more complex
and layered ways.
The work
is intended to generate interest in issues such as identity
and place, the contemporary culture of the image, and the
shifting positionalities of the painting, the painter and
the viewer.
